McGreevey can't be governor if he's gay?

N.J. Gov. James E. McGreevey

I dunno, the news just broke and we don't know the whole story, but you gotta wonder, as Barry asked just now, "He resigned? Is being gay more shameful than being corrupt?"

Um, maybe you guys didnt watch the actual press conference, but only saw the abreviated press reports - he said rather clearly that being GAY isn't the reason for resignation - that the circumstances surrounding his affair (admittedly, he didnt go into those details) is why he is resigning. And besides, he isn't merely gay - he's a married man, who put his boyfriend on staff at taxpayers expense, advising the State of New Jersey on terrorism - something the man, had no expereince with! Too bad other politicians arent wise enough to resign, rather than spend months or years defending themselves.

I think he's pretty screwed up on this stuff. He opposed gay marriage, he wouldn't confront his Catholic bishop when he threatened to withhold communion over his pro-choice stance, and he's clueless enough to think that the USA is the best country in the world for queers and other minorities:

"And so my truth is that I am a gay American. And I am blessed to live in the greatest nation with the tradition of civil liberties, the greatest tradition of civil liberties in the world, in a country which provides so much to its people."

It's a sad story overall, but I'm not thinking of him as much of a hero right now.
